Sturgis Carbon Profiling was commissioned by Great Portland Estates to produce a Whole-life Carbon Assessment of St Lawrence House and identify options that could reduce its embodied carbon impacts at design stage and through construction to practical completion.
Initially proposed to be a project with partial refurbishment, the estimated footprint was even lower compared to similar new builds. However, this option was not deemed feasible by the design team and the current scheme with all new superstructure with only part of the sub-structure retained was agreed.
The design team has incorporated recommendations made by SCP to reduce embodied carbon in their tender specifications and thus the project has a smaller carbon footprint than comparative new builds.
The project is currently on site and SCP has developed a site monitoring protocol to record the embodied carbon emissions for this building until its practical completion.
